Panic Anxiety and Dr Claire Weekes

July 3rd, 2009 by admin

There is one doctor, Dr Claire Weekes, that has an exceptional international reputation for her work in the field of anxiety and panic. Doctors and treatment centers from several different countries recommend her work.  She has achieved distinction as the first woman Doctor of Science at the University of Sydney, and was recognized by Queen Elizabeth II for her contributions to medicine.  She was twice nominate for a Nobel Peace Prize, in 1983 and 1990 and is hailed as one of the pioneers of self help in psychiatry.

Dr Weekes is no longer alive but her work is still considered as relevant as it was when she was alive.  All of her work was based on 3 principles: her own experience as a sufferer of anxiety, her outstanding scientific knowledge and her observation of her own patients.  She would never claim to cure people; she would always say that she showed people how they could heal themselves.   Dr Weekes believed that panic and anxiety are the result of a continuous state of severe sensitization which is fed by confusion and fear. The state of anxiety can be precipitated by a particular event or alternatively it can occur over time, especially if the person is dealing with ongoing unbearable stress. Her step by step self help methods teach one to regain control over their state of mind. Not only that, but she gives you practical ways to deal with your feelings of fear and dread. Also, unlike any other, she will help you thoroughly understand your many physical symptoms which can be caused from overwraught nerves.

You can read an article about the causes of panic attacks here.

Her treatment explains what nervous fatigue is and how to cope with it and all the strange and frightening symptoms, both physical and emotional, that it brings in its wake. Dr weekes also explains depression which in the context of panic disorders can be thought of as depletion.  It is as if the sufferer has been hitting the panic button and flooding the engine with adrenaline for some considerable time and the battery is flat. Dr weekes will tell you how to recharge the battery. One of her strengths is that she is extremely good at reassuring her patients that they are not the only ones experiencing these symptoms and that there is in fact nothing seriously wrong with them.

If you are suffering from panic or a nervous disorder and you want some more information including free audio recordings of Dr Weekes work, you can visit Anxiety Assist for help.

Manic depression can effect a person’s ability to keep a job or maintain a health romantic and social relationships. While type two manic depression has the symptoms of a mental disorder, its root cause is an organic dysfunction.

Common Symptoms

Each person will experience manic depressive psychosis differently. In addition to violent mood swings, a person may display behaviors which are uncharacteristic. Effective Treatment

Once the diagnosis of manic depressive psychosis has been reached it is important manic depression support is offered to the patient. Emotional support is vital to help someone get through treatment. It is important to be patient and understanding with someone who is seeking treatment for manic depressive psychosis.

Because manic depressive psychosis can cause delusional thinking, it is important that the patient be accompanied by a relative or close friend when they go to doctor appointments. This support person should be aware of the amounts and dosages of medications so they can monitor the patient and make sure they are taking their medication properly. They can also observe the patient’s symptoms and report back to the doctor.

Treatment Regime

Once an effective treatment is established, it has to be continued for life. Scheduling activities on a daily basis and avoiding disruptive situations will help a patient maintain equilibrium. Sleeping problems are common for people with this disorder and a regular bedtime and routine can alleviate sleeping problems.

Learning when an episode is about to happen can be helpful in avoiding an escalation of the condition. It is also important to have realistic expectation of treatment; symptoms will start to ease gradually over time with continued treatment.

Your attitude to dealing with Anxiety

July 1st, 2009 by admin

In today’s society we all have a certain amount of stress and anxiety that we must learn to deal with. In fact, a lot of this stress is necessary and part and parcel of living. Dealing with anxiety such as this is part of our daily routine. It might be as simple as worrying about what to make for dinner or stressing over a promotion at work. Most of the time, we can deal with these kinds of concerns without it becoming a major issue.

If you are suffering from anxiety and insomnia, click here.

Occasionally though our concerns turn into anxieties that are significant enough to affect our actual lives. In the main, stress like this is useful as it helps motivate us to take action in our lives. You know your anxiety is a real issue when you are paralysed into inaction and start to avoid certain important facets of your life.

It is not easy to learn how to cope with anxiety if you are continually under duress and are worried about the possibility of having an anxiety attack. A person can actually have panic attacks that are brought on by the anticipation of a a panic attack alone.

A good starting point is to try and sit back and try to figure out if there are any obvious causes for your anxiety. Sometimes the problem is right in front of you, other times it may be something that you will really have to search for. Very ofen, people will repress their feelings so don’t worry if you can’t figure things out immediately.

If you are interested in trying to control anxiety with hypnosis, you can read more here.

It may be beneficial to share your problem with a friend or family an you can even start to keep a journal. There is certainly evidence that shows that writing your feelings down and making a note of the circumstances under which they occurred, can certainly help you identify your triggers. Understanding why you are having problems can certainly help put them in perspective.

If your anxiety is caused by a situation that you can remedy, then it is important to start a course of action to rectify that situation. If on the other hand you are dealing with a “what if” or hypothetical situation, and you are simply looking at a worst case scenario, then you must learn to let it go. These hypothetical situations rarely, if ever, come to fruition and as such you should try to let go and concentrate only on the things that you can control in your life.

The Best Way To Eliminate Depression

June 30th, 2009 by admin

Any person who has suffered with depression or who is currently suffering with depression will fully appreciate just how badly it can affect our lives. It is something that kind of creeps us on when we are least expecting it and then hits us for six. It can leave us feeling unable to complete the most simplest of tasks. The only way people can think is in the negative and the words of wisdom of people trying to help us only ever fall on deaf ears.

I suffered from a long bout of depression when I was in my teens. This was mainly due to the fact that I had a speech impediment, a stutter. This was something that virtually destroyed my self-esteem and despite my best efforts to increase confidence the stutter would always come back to bite me and ruin what ever progress I had made.

I did not want to continue living in this way, with a constant fear of stuttering, being down and depressed. The main problem however was the fact that the people who were meant to be helping me, the speech and language therapists, were forever telling me that there was not a known cure for stuttering. OK, thanks - this is exactly what I needed to hear! How was I ever supposed to break free from the cycle of depression and how was I ever supposed to start thinking positively when I had people like this destroying whatever hope that I had?

I was very lucky to have an extremely supportive family who worked very hard to help me to get back to reality. They convinced me to fight against this tide of negativity and to believe in myself. There was only one way to think and that was in a positive manner. I had to ignore what the speech therapists had said and had to keep believing that I could one day achieve fluency. I also had to start working hard to enable this day to become a reality.

My dad once stated:

“There is no time for depression; you have too much work to do – to eradicate the stutter and to learn how to increase your overall confidence levels”.

It was far from easy however I did manage to break free from the depression and at the age of twenty-two I also managed to overcome the speech impediment.

Measuring and assessing your anxiety levels

June 29th, 2009 by admin

The Hamilton anxiety rating scale (HARS) was developed as a tool to be used by doctors and therapists to determine the severity of a patient’s anxiety. In order to measure this anxiety, there is a set of 14 questions which are aimed at the different types of anxiety that patients typically experience.  The first thirteen of these questions are answered by the patient based on interviews and questions asked, whereas the last question is used by the therapists to show how they feel the patient is actually doing.

Here is a link to some reviews to help you stop your panic attacks.

Max Hamilton developed the HARS test as he felt there was a need to be able to measure both mental and physical or somatic anxiety.  The test can be used on children and younger adults although there has also been recent support for its use in older patients.  Hamilton created a list of physical and mental symptoms after using factor analysis to create a list of overall symptoms.

The test is administered by the doctor or therapist who asks the patients the corresponding questions on the questionnaire and then rates their answers on a scale from 0-4 with four being the highest level of anxiety.  All the scores are totalled and this total is then used to give the therapist an idea of the patients mental state.  The questions are equally divided between physical and mental with the intention of providing a a balanced view of the two types of symptom.

Visit this site if you like more info about controlling panic attacks

After adding up the results, it is felt that if a person has a score of less than 17 that this person only has mild anxiety which can be easily treated with therapy.  Sometimes this can be misleading.  Many people will try to mask their true feeling out of embarressment. It takes a well trained therapist to coax the real answers out and to be able to make an accurate diagnosis. If the patient scores between 18-24 then this indicates a moderate level of anxiety which can be helped by learning to meditate or to breathe correctly.   Any patient that scores more than 25 is experiencing severe anxiety.  When anxiety is this bad there may be a call for the short term use of medication which can be used in conjunction with CBT and other relaxation techniques.

While the test is useful to help therapists to understand a patient’s level of anxiety, it is only as good as the skills of the therapist and the answers are very much subject to interpretation.  In fact the questions reflect not only the patients answers but the therapists interpretation of the answers.  Whilst not perfect, in the right hands the test has proven to work remarkably well.  However questions have been raised regarding the similarity between the responses by those who suffer from anxiety and those who suffer from depression, since those who suffer from depression often score high on the HARS test.

Check this out to learn more about the link between depression and anxiety

Despite the possibility of skewed results, the Hamilton anxiety rating scale is still the most popular test used to evaluate patients in use today.  The reality is that over very many years HARS has demonstrated that it is accurate and consistent.   Combined  with the correct type and degree of treatment, many people are able to cure themselves of this debilitating condition.
